About

  • ICTNLE stands for Information & Communication Technologies, Non-Linear Editing.
  • When this web-site was launched in 2004 it focused on demonstrating that free open source software (FOSS) GNU Linux Debian can be a viable solution to run an independent film production with Cinelerra.
  • Both documentary film projects The duel and Dance on swing were post-produced using exclusively FOSS (which was quite a challenge at the time...)

Skills transfer

  • Over the years I have found that teaching and authoring contents for on-line synchronous delivery in xml + php + Moodle involve soft skills similar to those found in documentary film-making: you should adapt contents to the learner on the spur of the moment in the same way as footage should be shot and edited to reflect the truth you have unveiled, and not what you had planned in your script...
    • Instructional design of case studies, role plays, stress interviews... require story telling patterns which are widespread in fiction and documentary narratives.
    • Maieutics (aka Socratic questioning) used in coaching & consulting is reminiscent of journalism in eliciting the truth by asking rhetorical questions.
    • Coaching for a job interview and rehearsing the delivery of a presentation rely on skillsets relevant to script writing and preparing interview questions.
    • Object-oriented programming (contrary to procedural programming) is akin to non-linear editing a film, at least in a documentary film, where convergent thinking is obviously a worse approach.

  • Such multidisciplinary approach and expertise enable both choosing the right tools for a given task as well as sometimes deliberately tinkering with solutions from another environment to create opportunities for divergent thinking (which is all the rage in the days of AI formatting, isn't?).
